Here’s what you can expect when you experience spider vein removal therapy, or Sclerotherapy, at National Laser Institute Med Spa.
Sclerotherapy Pre- Treatment
If you take aspirin, NSAIDs or blood thinners, you will need to stop taking these medications for two weeks prior to the procedure, to reduce the chances of bleeding. For 24 hours before the procedure, avoid shaving or applying any lotion to your legs. Wear loose and comfortable shorts so that your legs are exposed.
The Sclerotherapy Treatment
Spider vein removal is minimally invasive and it will only take 45-60 minutes for your Sclerotherapy treatment. The majority of our clients have little to no discomfort from the treatment. Your doctor will inject a saline (water) based solution mixed with a medication that assist in closing down the vein. Over time, the vein will disappear by being reabsorbed by the body.
Sclerotherapy Post Treatment
After your spider vein removal treatment, it will look like you have tiny mosquito bites and some bruising at the injections sites for 24-48 hours. Side effects are rare but can include swelling, itching and skin color changes in the treated area. You can typically go back to work the next day and resume normal activities of daily life almost immediately.
Moderate compression hoses (15-20mm Hg) are to be worn for 24 hours post treatment and then daily for at least 72 hours. It is recommended to wear them as much as possible for 14 days post treatment. Avoid working out and any strenuous activity at least 24 hours after injections. However, walking is recommended immediately after receiving treatment.
How Long Will It Take To See Results?
In a few weeks, treated spider veins start to fade. Although the same vein may need to be injected more than once, after one month, you will see a dramatic change in the appearance of the vein and after two months the vein should be no longer visible.
As a general rule, minimal spider veins, including a few scattered spider veins, will take 1-2 sessions. Mild spider veins, including a single large nest or a few scattered smaller nests in both legs will take 2-4 sessions. Moderate spider veins, including more than six medium to large nests, will take 3-5 sessions. Severe spider veins, including multiple nests covering large portions of the buttock, hip, and/or legs, will take 5 or more sessions.
