Do You Have Acne Aging Skin?
If you suffer from adult acne, you know all too well how many treatments will just mask the problem and not solve it. Acne aging skin is the most common skin disorder in the U.S., affecting 40 to 50 million Americans annually. As a nation, we spend billions on acne aging skin treatments every year. And when makeup, lotions and potions fail, we are tempted to try just about anything.
To treat a skin concern, we need to fully understand the root of the problem. It doesn’t make sense to mask the problem when many aging skin concerns can actually be dangerous for your health.
A common example of attempting to mask a problem is the myth that the sun will help improve acne. What people are actually seeing is the tan darkening the skin around pimples, making them stand out less. The sun also dries out skin, and while anything that cuts through oil seems like a good start, in the long run, sun only worsens acne. Sun exposure can not only make breakouts worse, it will age your skin prematurely. The sun damages the skin daily as it emits UV rays into the atmosphere whether it’s raining or shining.
UV rays damage the skin, weakening the natural barrier and causing it to lose moisture. While at first this means your oily zones dry up, your skin tries to fix this by producing more and more of its own oils. Instead of preventing or lessening breakouts, sun exposure worsens the root of the problem. It leads to overproduction by and overgrowth of sebaceous glands and can make blackheads more likely to occur, which is when oil and dead skin gets trapped in pores.
To add insult to acne, many of the chemicals (such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid) in blemish-busting creams worsen sun sensitivity, making your skin more vulnerable to UV-related aging and damage.
New Study Reveals Truth About Acne Aging Skin
There is a recent study that indicates people with acne aging skin may be more susceptible to the harmful UV rays than others. According to Greg Hillebrand, Ph.D., a recognized expert at Proctor & Gamble on the subject, there may be a real correlation between acne prone skin and skin aging.
“Porphyrins are produced by propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) that are normal inhabitants of the human skin and the pilosebaceous ducts. Porphyrins are highly fluorescent pores containing P. acnes and the associated porphyrins appear red-orange when facial skin is illuminated with long wavelength UVA radiation. The intensity of the follicular fluorescence and its extent of facial involvement is known to be proportional to the density of P. acnes,” says Dr. Hillebrand.
In other words, acne prone skin has a high amount of porphyrin content from P. acnes, which not only clogs pores but is potentially toxic to living cells. With exposure to the sun, porphyrins will oxidize lipids in the skin creating toxic peroxides that can cause skin damage. In fact, the presence of porphyrins may enhance or accelerate hyperpigmentation, wrinkling and other signs of photo-aging by sun exposure.
