6 Biggest Anti Aging Myths Exposed

1. FICTION: Standing in the shade protects you from UV damage.

FACT: Just because you are in the shade doesn’t mean your skin is safe from dangerous UV rays. Diffuse irradiation (scattered solar beams) in the atmosphere during daylight hours is responsible for 80 percent of your annual dose of UV exposure. Sun damage is cumulative and you simply must wear SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen no matter if you are in the shade or not. And even when it’s a cloudy day, scattered solar beams permeate through cloud cover.

2. FICTION: Everyone’s skin ages the same way.

FACT: Oily skin is naturally moisturized. The oil protects the skin and keeps youth-preserving moisture from escaping.  This means the aging process is slowed. Dry skin shows fine lines earlier.  If you have dry skin use a product with hyaluronic acid to attract moisture to your skin.

3. FICTION: Daily exfoliation will keep your skin young.

FACT: This is true for some skin types. But if you have sensitive skin, aggressive exfoliating can do more harm than good. Avoid heavy abrasion, use a gentle cleansing brush daily, and get a Vi Peel to boost radiance.

4. FICTION: Your diet has little to do with how your skin ages.

FACT: High glycemic foods are the opposite of superfoods. They are super-enemies of your skin as they cause your body to produce insulin, and aging accelerates due to inflammation.  Choose antioxidant superfoods like colorful veggies to fight inflammation.  An Australian study at Monash University shows those who eat more green and yellow veggies have fewer wrinkles, especially crow’s-feet.

5. FICTION: Wrinkles are caused by facial expressions.

FACT: While this is true, wrinkles can also form when you are sleeping on your stomach when your skin is being squished into a pillow.  Try to train yourself to sleep on your back because over time your skin will be less likely to bounce back.

6. FICTION: Good over-the-counter skin care products can erase signs of aging.

FACT: This is helpful, but you really to go deeper below the surface of the skin to increase collagen and tighten the skin.  Laser treatments are the most effective way to do this, and to reach into the deeper layers of the skin where real changes in collagen production take place.  If you have never tried a laser treatment before, a good place to start is with a Photofacial.
