FAQ Voluma Dermal Fillers

If you are curious about what dermal fillers are, we have answers for you.  Read on and be enlightened.  You may be surprised at just how natural dermal fillers really are.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are popular cosmetic treatments which benefit anti-aging aesthetics.  A dermal filler injection is a pharmaceutical grade liquid or gel material injected beneath the skin to get rid of laugh lines and nasolabial folds, fill deep frown lines, erase crow’s feet, raise drooping eyebrows, eliminate deep forehead creases, plump thin lips, correct facial asymmetries, and more.

Plastic surgeons, dermatologists, nurses and medical aestheticians provide these services and should be highly trained and certified in the field of cosmetic injectables.

In general,  Botox is used for the top half of the face, and dermal fillers are used for the bottom half. The main areas where dermal fillers are injected are the nasolabial folds, around the mouth, and marionette lines.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Depending on the dermal filler used, the effects last from six months to indefinitely. While there are temporary and permanent dermal fillers, you will want to choose a temporary filler.  The reason is precautionary.  For example, if the permanent filler were placed in the wrong location or in the wrong volume, you would be stuck with the results: permanently. Most dermal fillers are temporary and dissolve in six to 24 months.

There are several types of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers available. Juvederm XC, Juvederm Voluma XC, Juvederm, and Restylane are the most popular hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.  Hyaluronic acid is an essential, naturally occurring substance in the body that diminishes as we age. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers add volume to the face, are shapeable, and look natural. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers typically last six to 12 months and can also be used for lip augmentation.

Calcium hydroxylapatite is another essential, naturally occurring substance in the human body.  It is used in Radiesse: a thick, viscous material which lasts longer than hyaluronic acid fillers as it break down more gradually. As the calcium hydroxylapatite breaks down, it is naturally replaced with collagen, which keeps the area wrinkle free for a longer period of time.

The Dermal Filler Injector

The dermal filler material which is used depends on the areas that are being injected. The right material must be used with the appropriate application. This is why where you go and the dermal filler injector is actually more important than the filler itself.  They must be well trained and knowledgeable to the idiosyncrasies of the human face and how they interact with the dermal filler placement and type.

The injector must be an expert in the use of dermal filler materials, how facial expression muscles work, indications, risks and benefits of these treatments, hands-on training in placing these materials, and preventing and managing complications. In general, the results from most injectables are temporary lasting from 3 months to a year. The duration depends on which dermal filler is used. For the best results you should have additional treatment sessions.
