Smart Beauty 7 Skincare Myths Exposed

1. Wash your face two times per day

This is false. Just a little splash of water in the morning is fine if you are not using thick greasy creams at night.  It’s best to wash your face at night to remove pollution and makeup.

2. Chocolate causes breakouts

This is generally false.  Dark chocolate can actually be good for you when consumed in moderation. This decadent treat has health benefits and it can actually protect your skin. German researchers discovered the flavonoids in dark chocolate absorb UV light, help protect and increase blood flow to the skin, and improve skin’s hydration and complexion.

3. Dairy is bad for your skin

This is true. There is much research which shows dairy is inflammatory and is linked to acne breakouts.

4. You need two separate moisturizing creams for day and night

This is not true.  Night creams can contain the same ingredients as day creams but without sunscreen.  Be careful with night creams containing retinols which are light sensitive and should only be used at night.

5. Open pores with hot water; Close pores with cold water

This is not true. Your pores will not shrink or expand based on water temperature. But hot water can make the outer layers of the skin expand which makes pores look more open.

6. You can use a body lotion on your face

This is not true.  Body lotion contains ingredients that may irritate the more delicate skin on your face.  Body lotions are formulated for the skin on your body which is thicker, has less sebaceous glands, and is much drier.

7. You need to switch up your skin care regimen

This is not true.  You can change products if they stop working for you.  But as you age and depending on the season, you will likely need different products for your skin.
